FEDERAL INITIATIVIES

Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA)

  • STEPS STEPS is a five year grant program to assist communities in improving the health of their residents through health promotion and prevention initiatives.Twelve grantees were awarded a total of $35.7 million grants in 2003 through this program. Each program received increased funding in 2004 and many doubled their funding from the previous year. In addition, 10 new programs were awarded grants this year. The grants will help implement community action plans in 40 communities nationwide. Examples of programs in schools, health care and workplace settings include organized community interventions such as walking programs, health education trainings and media campaigns; environmental interventions like smoking cessation programs and increasing healthy food choices in schools; and educational interventions like enhancing coordinated school health programs.

National Heart Blood and Lung Institute (NHBLI, NIH) The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) was initiated in March 1989 to address the growing problem of asthma in the United States. The NAEPP is administered and coordinated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The NAEPP works with intermediaries including major medical associations, voluntary health organizations, and community programs to educate patients, health professionals, and the public. The ultimate goal of the NAEPP is to enhance the quality of life for patients with asthma and decrease asthma-related morbidity and mortality.

Environmental Protection Agency: Mid-Atlantic Regional Asthma Initiative (MARAI)
The objectives of MARAI are to: (1) establish a network of public and private sector stakeholders who have an interest and a role in implementing the National Asthma Strategy; (2) provide an educational forum to exchange information about the public health, policy and political issues pertaining to the asthma epidemic and create a communications infrastructure among the asthma community; and (3) serve as a catalyst for the development of new cooperative projects with regional stakeholders. Iowa: Iowa Asthma Control Program

Massachusetts: Asthma Coordination Project. Facilitates integration and information sharing throughout DPH programs, as well as with regional coalitions and community health organizations. The Asthma Coordination Project includes planning activities to promote improvements in policy, programs, research and clinical care to address issues such as access to care, asthma management, medications, education, and case management.

Oregon: Asthma in Oregon

Utah:

Vermont Department of Health, Asthma Initiative: Funded by the CDC and based on Healthy People 2010 objectives to improve prevention, education, management and care of asthma, and to develop a state-wide tracking system. Site has links to local initiatives in the state and additional information.

Washington, Seattle and King County, Allies Against Asthma: Four-year project to improve the health of low income children in neighborhoods located in Central and South Seattle and Southwest King County.
