Taking Action

Why should I get involved?

If you are here, you are concerned about your health, your child’s health and the health of others around you. Getting involved in your community is exciting and fun!

  • It can make you feel empowered
  • You have a voice in making the changes that you feel are important
  • You feel that you are part of something
  • It can help others around you
  • Solutions come from people like you!

What is the relationship between healthy communities and children’s health

  • Children grow up in communities. If communities are not healthy, children will also not be.
  • A safe community provides the best opportunity for children to grow into healthy adults
  • Poor adult health and poor adult health habits, such as smoking, obesity, alcohol and substance abuse, perceptions and risk for injury and violence, often begins in childhood.

How can I help?

  • Participate in local initiatives
  • Attend community meetings
  • Help with voter registration and other community activities to get other people more involved

How can I get involved?

  • Contact your local, county or state public health department
  • Contact local organizations that are involved in a specific issue in which you are interested
  • Contact your local city council or town board
