This page provides links to information, assessments, action plans, forms, articles on evidence-based research, asthma specialists, activities, clubs and support for children with asthma, and additional on-line resources for children with asthma.

INFORMATION, ASSESSMENT & MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH ASTHMA

  1. Asthma Treatment Options and Support, American Lung Association.  Patients can download and use free tools.  Tools are also provided for providers.  Asthma Profiler Tool provides interactive decision tools for identification and treatment of asthma based on evidence-based peer-reviewed medical research. This tool can be used by both providers and patients to develop profiles for either adults or children (children under the age of 17 require parent approval). Tool provides questionnaire and appropriate information for treatment based on responses. Site also provides links to peer-reviewed clinical studies. Use of profiler tool requires free registration. Click on “Asthma Patient Profiler” or “Asthma Provider Profile.”
  2. American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology: Asthma Screening (available in Spanish). ACAAI hgome page provides information for patients and families, providers and health care organizations, employers and purchasers of group health care, and the news media. Site is maintained by specialists in allergy, asthma and immunology.
  3. Assess Your Basic Knowledge of Asthma, Mayo Clinic. Site provides a short interactive test to determine your level of knowledge. Provides many links to additional information about asthma, including basic information about asthma, a video clip of an asthma attack, a guide for parents on symptoms and assessment, how to create an action plan for your child, treatment and medication, articles on various topics, access to specialists and more. This site can also be accessed through the general Mayo Clinic address.  Click on "Disease and Conditions" at the top of the screen, then "Asthma."
  4. Asthma Reference Guide, Asthma Action America. Comprehensive site on astham.
  5. Keeps Kids Healthy, Children’s Asthma Center. This site has a number of tools for childhood asthma, including: The site also has information links to asthma guidelines; information about symptoms, prevention, treatment and management; on-line forums; Internet resources; asthma specialists and more. Site can also be searched for age group specific health issues on a variety of topics.
  1. Medem Learning Center: Children with Asthma (Medical Library). Site provides information on the definition, symptoms, treatment and management of asthma for children. Medem is an on-line resource designed to enhance patient-provider communication and provide information on a wide variety of topics.

GENERAL INFORMATION & LINKS TO AGENCIES AND ASSOCIATIONS

  1. National Institutes for Health, Breath of Life. US, DHHS. This site provides selected on-line resources related to asthma. Includes links to a wide array of federal and state government institutions, professional and medical associations, university-based sites, and community-based non-profit organizations. Great place to see many asthma related organizations all in one place. Please be aware that some of the sites listed are no longer available or are in transition.
  2. Healthfinder: Your Guide to Reliable Health Information, US DHHS, Office of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. This site provides links to information about all health issues, including a library; the ability to search on specific populations and issues; information about practitioners, Medicaid and Medicare, medical privacy, patient rights and more; and a directory of health-related agencies, clearinghouses, non-profit organizations and universities. Search on asthma to find the most recent information and documents. Information is also available in Spanish.
  3. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Asthma Education and Prevention  Program (NAEPP). The goal of NAEPP is to provide asthma education to patients, health care professionals, and the public.  Site describes the program and gives information for multiple groups, including educational slides. 
  4. Global Initiative for Asthma. International organization devoted to increasing awareness, access to care, prevention, research, information and resources about asthma worldwide. Site contains links to workshops for providers, pocket guides for providers, patient guides, and additional resources. Organization is sponsored primarily by pharmaceutical companies and geared for the health care provider community. See calendar for World Asthma Day.

ASTHMA AND SCHOOLS

  1. National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute, National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Slide Show. User can download slide show in power point, text version or PDF formats on asthma in schools. Slide also available on guidelines for diagnosis and management of asthma. Home site has many additional links, tools and resource information.
  2. Asthma and Allergy Tool Kit for School Nurses. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, site provides educational information, Power Point presentations and handouts in pdf format.
  3. Management of Asthma at School. The Urban Special Education Leadership Collaborative, Responsive Schools: Creating Management and Support Systems for Students with Asthma. This web site provides information and tools specifically designed for interfacing with schools, including sample forms for schools, tools and surveys, a guide to Internet resources, and tools and examples for creating asthma-friendly policies in schools. The home site is focused on special education but the asthma link has useful information for school staff, families, and community organizations involved in asthma issues at schools.
  4. National Association of Elementary School Principals. Search for asthma-related information. Site provides information and links to articles on issues relating to asthma in schools. Geared primarily for school staff.

ASTHMA CAMPS

  1. Consortium on Children’s Asthma Camps: Find an asthma camp in your state or elsewhere. Also has links to Asthma Action Plan, an Asthma Camp Activities Manual (with information and tools for assessment and management of asthma), an Asthma Camp Tool Kit (a manual on how to plan, establish, market an asthma camp, along with medical considerations and tools), and links to other asthma sites.

DATA AND RESEARCH LINKS

  1. Child Health Tool Box: Measuring Performance in Child Health Programs, Agency for Health Care Quality and Research, US DHHS. This site provides information and links for understanding if your child is receiving high-quality of care. Information targets families, providers and policymakers. General for health, not specific to asthma but describes national surveys and measures for assessing quality of care. You can also search the literature on asthma and obtain extensive abstracts, contact, and reprint information on peer-reviewed and evidence-based research findings. Very comprehensive.
  2. Healthy People 2010 Data: Create your own data tables. National Center for Health Statistics, US DHHS. Site allows user to create specific data tables using data related to Healthy People 2010 goals. This allows analysts, program managers, and policymakers to compare their location with national and state data and to create relevant data elements for reports, presentations, legislation, grants, press releases, or other documents. Asthma is found under HP 2010 Objective #24. Site also has links to other federal surveys.
  3. National Institute of Environmental Health Research (NIEHS) Asthma Research Center, US DHHS. Site provides links to (1) summaries of research studies on developing strategies for prevention and intervention; assessing environmental exposure; and the role of genetics and pathogenesis of asthma; (2) allergy prevention; and (3) additional asthma-related resources.
  4. The State of Asthma in America, This survey was conducted during May-July 1998 by the national public-opinion research organization Schulman, Ronca and Bucuvalas, Inc. (SRBI) with funding from Glaxo Wellcome, Inc., a research-based pharmaceutical company. The survey explored asthma prevalence, the frequency and severity of symptoms, utilization of emergency care, quality of life, and quality of care issues. Interviews were completed with a national sample of 2,509 adults with asthma or parents of children with asthma. The site provides an overview of the survey, access to state and regional data, referenced asthma statistics, guidelines and strategies for management and on-line resources.
