Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decreased Overweight and Obesity (2001).

American Academy of Pediatrics Recommendations for Overweight and Obesity (click on AAP website for Overweight and Obesity, the click on Full Recommendations)

CDC Overweight and Obesity Prevention Program. 

Provides funding to states to prevent overweight and obesity through nutrition and physical activity initiatives.  See also within this site Taking Action: State Initiatives

CDC and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Clinical Guidelines on the Identification, Evaluation and Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults. Provides various documents for downloading including

The CDC and American Obesity Association recommend that a 10% loss in body weight can reduce risks associated with overweight and obesity. Prevention and Treatment therapies include:

  • Dietary changes
  • Physical activity
  • Behavior therapy to promote weight loss, change in diet and increased physical activity
  • Drug therapy
  • Combined therapies and
  • Surgery
