Management and Treatment Options for Overweight and Obesity
Treatment for overweight and obesity can be categorized into clinical programs and non-clinical programs. Clinical programs include medically supervised weight-loss and surgery. Surgery is only recommended for people with morbid obesity (BMI of 40 or greater) and being over 100 lbs above the desired weight and for whom other programs have not worked. A psychiatric evaluation is generally required and patients must be willing to accept the risks and subsequent limitations as a result of surgery. Non-clinical programs include weight-loss, weight management, physical activity, nutrition and other programs not under the care of a physician. All recommendations for treatment options suggest talking with your doctor before engaging in a treatment program.
